*C BAND ON A 1M SATELLITE DISH IN THE UK *
*C BAND RECEPTION & DISH SIZES IN THE UK*
C BAND has been usually received on larger dishes but with the advent of better LNBs, more sensitive receivers & some higher power/ better footprints, Eutelsat & Intelsat now both quote dish sizes from 90cm for 41dBW & some beams reach 42dBW & even 43dBW & these figures are for reception with acceptable margin and not minimum & RAIN MARGIN can be much better in C Band as it is genuiningly less affected by rain or clouds, so some C Band has become more than acceptable on as low as 90cm and there are TV channels carrying some useful events & programming on C Band.

Old dish sizes based on 20 Kelvin noise temp' LNBs & older less sensitive tuners
New dish sizes based on 'estimates' using 13 Kelvin noise temp' LNBs & new sensitive receivers/ tuners.
Minimum dish sizes based on no bad weather or adverse condition margins with new figures.
Reception of Linear can be reduced if the LNB is fitted with a dielectric plate for circular C Band reception.

EXAMPLE C BAND FOOTPRINTS IN THE UK.
3.3E C BAND LINEAR FOOTPRINT
This was easily the easiest (Linear) C Band to receive in the UK on a 1m offset dish, this
was so strong it could be received with the dielectric plate for CIRCULAR in the LNB.
THIS POSITION HAS ALTERED - SEE 3.1e & 2.9e C BAND CIRCULAR!
5W C BAND CIRCULAR FOOTPRINT
With a massive coverage area, it can carry channels & broadcast feeds
including some that carry live sports events free which would be on pay
tv or not avaiable in the UK at all.
27.5W C BAND CIRCULAR FOOTPRINT
27.5W carries a lot of USA channels for different regions from Voice of America
that do carry a lot of Ameican based programming in English plus other channels
for example RTG from Guinea that carries live football not available free in the UK.
11W C BAND CIRCULAR FOOTPRINT
11w carries Russian channels & there has been an interest in Russian TV since
they can show LIVE EPL free , the reception isn't high, in fact it comes in at below
lock level on a Technomate but is 100% even in quite heavy periods of rain.
22W C BAND CIRCULAR FOOTPRINT
22w Carries Atlantic TV/ Sport TV/ NEWS TV as part of an encrypted package
plus obviously African based channels, luckely they all like football including
English & world cup games & don't always play by the rules.
20E C BAND CIRCULAR FOOTPRINT
20e has a lot pf Arabic channels including special free versions of JSC
Sports etc.. that can show premier live sports events FREE.
37.5W C BAND LINEAR FOOTPRINT
The signals on 37.5w are quite high for the UK reaching beteeen 41-42dBW
and are LINEAR so may be receivable with the dielectric plate left in.
There are a lot more C Band footprints into the UK, this is a selection of
some of the easier ones to go for to start with.

** HOW TO RECEIVE C BAND ON A 1M DISH IN THE UK.**
C BAND LNB
There are several 13k Single band, 13v/18v pol switching C Band LNBs available with prime focus feed horns & dielectric plate for circular from several retailers or ebay which will do for this but you can go better & more expensive - see Chaparral etc.. plus there are now some offset C Band feedhorns- often called scalas although that is the name of the rings in feedhorns.
EG: C BAND LNB OFFSET C BAND FEEDHORNS (top 2) C BAND OFFSET FH FACE VIEW
Positioning the feedhorn is critical - KU band LNBFs come with their own carefully designed feedhorns, C120 have a set feedhorn position,
feedhorns or scala plates for prime focus dishes have precise markings for F/D ratios to position the scala plate for any PF dish
but using C Band on offset dishes requires more adjusting to get the best position from either a prime focus feedhorn/ scala plate
or C Band offset feedhorn.
SETUP THE RECEIVER
Make or modify a new satellite position 3.3e C Band & set as below.
Each C band satellite you wish to use needs to be setup as above.
For circular use V for R (RIGHT) & H = L (LEFT)
C BAND LNB HOLDER
Buy or make a C Band LNB holder- a 63-65mm U bolt can be used & you will need to fasten it to the LNB arm.
Diag of example mod fit C Band LNB holder to KU Offset dish.
Maintain the center line in both axis of you do not want to change the elevation on fixed dishes or declnatin angle on motorised, it will also make it easier to swap between KU & C band manually.
Otherwise use an LNB holder to put the C band LNB in offset & use a diseqc switch to switch between the two.
Use 5w C BAND to line up focus & Skew the LNB & get the best position for the feedhorn.
(ABOVE is an example of a prme C Band focus feedhorn on an offset dish - tilting back gets simolar results to conical).
FOR CIRCULAR INSERT THE DIELECTRIC PLATE IN THE LNB IN THE GUIDES
Left: This will improve circular C Band reception but will lower LINEAR reception if left in.
Right: Also seal the drain holes when using C Band LNBs on offset dishes as they are then upside down.
C BAND LNB WITH OFFSET FEEDHORN EG WAVEGUIDE POSITION
Using a C Band offset feedhorn - fine tune both the waveguide's (LNB'S) focus & the feedhorn's position (effective optimum F/D ratio)
TIPS On C BAND ON A 1M DISH
Use V for R RIGHT & H for L LEFT.
Try stronger signals first - 38dBW-43dBW & easier formats - DVB-S/QPSK 1.2 FEC being easier - higher FECs get progressively harder & DVB-S2/ 8PSK even harder / DVB-S/8PSK easier / dvb-s2/8psk easier / low symbol rates/ narrow bandwidths are harder & slower to lock, although there are as always surprises that beams that look too difficult come in fine & some that look like a sure bet, don't..
C BAND
C Band is an older type of satellite transmission still in use around the world, it uses a lower frequency than Ku band, the system now used on most DTH .. Direct To Home satellites in Europe & generally C Band is transmitted ay a lower power due to C band being also used in ground communications & usually requires a larger dish, but with better LNBs & tuners, some good reception of several satellites can be acheived on a 1m dish in the UK & can carry sports events etc. normally encrypted in the UK such as football/ boxing etc...
C Band also uses a bigger LNB with a much bigger waveguide (opening) but the principles are the same. Because of this It also can tolerate a dish that is less true - (dented - distorted)** & can use quite open wire mesh for the dish surface due to the longer wavelength (**that means the larger waveguide is a bigger hole for the focused signals to get in & going on the basics of a 10th of a wavelength tolerance rule will tolerate more outage (than Ku band's smaller wavelength)).
C Band also is less attenuated by rain than KU band - KU Band is at a microwave frequency which just like a microwave oven - the microwave signals will deliver their energy into the water molecules & excite them (heat them), losing the energy for the TV picture in the process. C Band doesn't do that or as much, although it has it's own bad weather issues but in rain the dish sizes needed for KU & C become effectively closer.
Satellites & beams & their use subject to change without notice.
Signals from the same satellite on the same beam can have a higher or lower EIRP than others - these figures are from several sources but most are based on satellite companies projections unless we have our own or trusted 3rd party tests.
