IPTV VS SATELLITE TV
INTERNET TV VS SATELLITE TV

 THE BIG QUESTIONS ANSWERED
We receive endless calls from people who have tried IPTV boxes & weren't happy with their shorfalls & want motorised satellite TV for the higher quality & reliability.

So what are the pluses & minuses of IPTV vs Satellite TV.

COSTS
IPTV / STREAMING TV  IS NEVER FREE [unless it's SAT > IP]
When you use IPTV / STREAMING TV even on free services, you are using up your broadband THAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR and pulling tv through your home's internet can use up far more than normal internet use plus many are now finding they have to add extra costs for VPNs hiding their internet use & paying for services as genuingly free services are either of very low quality or are not so genuine & are constantly getting cut off &/or replaced with even worse streams.

SATELLITE SYSTEMS CAN BE USED FREE

QUALITY

EACH SATELLITE CAN DELIVER UP TO ABOUT 5Gb/s (ATM) & THERE ARE ABOUT 60 SATELLITES (& INCREASING) EASILY ACCESSED FROM SAY THE UK SO THAT'S ACCESS TO UP TO 300Gb/s ON MOTORISED SATELLITE SYSTEMS (COMPARED TOANYONE'S INTERNET BROADBAND SPEED- EVEN COMMERCIAL LINES) .
& IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY PEOPLE USE IT IN A HOUSEHOLD/ STREET / AREA/ TOWN/ CITY / COUNTRY
OR HOW MANY SATELLITE DISHES ARE INSTALLED,

SATELLITE TV CAPACITY JUST KEEPS ON DELIVERING MORE & MORE
& NEVER SLOWS DOWN & DOESN'T CLOGG YOUR INTERNET UP OR GET UPSET IF SOMEONE GOES ON THE INTERNET IN THE PROPERTY.

IPTV & THE INTERNET IS A
CAPACITY Vs USE SYSTEM.

That is, there is only so much capacity at any one time on the internet for internet use [like viewing this website], IPTV channels, movie & music downloads, catchup TV, computer gaming, pier to pier etc. etc..
Like our roads & motorways for cars, trucks, buses which have had £billions spent on them trying to increase, traffic slow traffic calming, parking restrictions & ever on going maintenance etc.. and after all the work by experts & £billions of tax payers money spent, we, like so many other places, have ended up with clogged roads, bizarre road layouts, relentless parking restrictions, toll charges, low emissions & congestion charging costs (directly & indirectly).

TRAFFIC JAMS NIGHTMARE

Is that the future we can expect from the INTERNET?

except, with the internet, we can't see traffic jams like the M25 traffic jams- it's all hidden behind the scenes how bad it's all got.

Or is the internet something different, that they will solve the capacity over use problem & not go the same way as our roads & motorways.

Lets have a look at some of the figures.

The UK government aims are to have a minimum coverage on 30Mb/s broadband over 98% of the UK homes by 2018.

30Mb/s per household [aim]?

That can be less than 1 decent UHD TV channel (c. 40Mb/s) or a decent live satellite broadcast feed (if you already have a decent satellite system & are used to using the broadcast feeds you'll know what that means) but basically, 40Mb/s (or higher).
That means the whole of the UK's broadband minimum coverage aims for 2018 could be used up watching pone TV channel in UHD?

30Mb/s could take 7-10 standard definition channels or 3 HD channels - really that's just one set top box's expectations if you including the recording many use, but then on top of that there's all the other Internet usage in a household, other's using the internet- WIFI for internet / gaming/ music downloading & lots of incidental Internet based use / updates/ monitoring, even live monitoring of CCTV etc..

YES, BUT I ALREADY HAVE [up to] 100Mb/s BROADBAND or more {but I am paying a lot for it].

For those who live in an area with higher internet broadband speeds, they may think they are above this capacity Vs use problem using the internet already, but wait a moment, 100Mb/s is the local speed & often subject to traffic use limits (hence those little [BIG] words "up to") plus the Internet TV channel has to make it's way there via whatever capacity/ speed it meets on the way just like our roads & motorways- it's up to 70mph but down to 1mph or less in traffic jams and as more use it more capacity will get used up.

Can anyone remember when a car journey you used to make regularly took 10-15 minutes now takes an hour or two & you could find a parking space easily/ quickly & for free when you got there.
What happened to our roads & will that happen to the internet?

THEY CAN KEEP INCREASING INTERNET CAPACITY CAN'T THEY?
They can & definitely will, but not necessarily keep pace with increases in usage, & targets in the past have rarely been met for this or any similar service - look at cable coverage - Freeview coverage -
Gas & sewerage mains coverage across the UK is still far from 100% in thios day & age.

It's all about coverage costs versus returns & governments having to try to twist companires arms & fund coverage in many areas.
AND - digging up roads isn't ever as simple as most people think - it's a massive & very expensive undertaing, so are upgrades to servers etc. but speed/ capacity techniques at ther server are favoured over digging roads up yet again.

Mobile phones have a similar issue & they're popular too!
We think mobile phones/ SMART phones.. are great & are buying more & more of them, but most of their capacity / coverage & use problems are hidden with mobile phone operators using ever more elaberate techniques to HIDE the mounting capacity/ coverage & over use problems. Some newer smart phones do far more but actually suffer from poorer reception (which oddly helps the mobile phone operator's capacity problems).
How many times have you not been able to get reception or make a call - you won't know if an incoming call doesn't reach you & in business, £billions are lost through lost calls & why in London there has been a move BACK to the ordinary always on normal WIRED phone.

INTERNET (IPTV) Vs MOTORISED SATELLITE DISH SYSTEMS

It's a bit like comparing CARS & trucks in traffic jams on roads & motorways & then vying for expensive limited parking spaces.

Vs

flying over the the M25 in your own private JET / helicopter!

Satellite can easily handle multiple UHD/4K TV channels & broadcast feeds (eg studio to studio & outside Broadcast Feeds) of up to 40Mb/s or more & multiple channels around a house & we see UHD broadcast feeds up to 100Mb/s EACH on satellite that could bring even London's internet infrastructure to an M25 like standstill.

MOTORISED SATELLITE SYSTEMS PLUS IPTV / STREAMING

IPTV is great for getting channels you can't get on satellite & to help get more sportys/ football etc.., downloading movies & box series sets etc.. music, apps

THAT'S WHY OUR MOTORISED SATELLITE SYSTEMS INCLUDE IPTV / STREAMING / APPS

but we work with many broadcast companies too including the IPTV sectors & know the behind the scenes problems with TV on the INTERNET.
